Is coconut fiber good to use by itself in a crabitat?
Last Updated: 05/30/2009
We do not recommend using coconut fiber by itself as substrate for your crabitat.

Explanation:
One of the main purposes of the substrate in a crabitat is to provide a safe environment for your hermit crabs to molt in. Hermit crabs need darkness and protection from other crabs in the crabitat while they are most vulnerable, during molting.

If you use only coconut fiber in your tank then the other crabs can easily dig down to the molting crab and possibly scavenge them. Using a moist sand mixture like our Substrate allows the molting crab to pack a cave underground and provides them the necessary protection
